DotWhat? File Extensions Website

Watching files in our computer or mac, we do realize that most of the file extensions wake up in our brains reasonable doubts of the meaning, most still popular like jpg, png, gif, doc etc…

But still others are rather a mistery for us, this site helps with the description of each extension and encourage us to support and help others adding comments and new extensions name, kind of social networking growing website sharing knowledge for Microsoft Windows, MAC OS X and Unix based operating systems.

It also gives advice how to remove spy ware and links you to programs that scan the computer and help you solving this problems.

Indeed a nice helper which I have as a must under my favorites.

Some operating systems limit the length of the extension such as DOS and OS/2, to three characters while others such as Unix do not. Some operating systems for example RISC OS do not use filename extensions.

I'm using microsoft windows OS I'n not familiar with MAC OS X and Unix based operating systems. I hope to learn that for an experience or if I find it good I'll use it for the better.

In some operating systems for example Unix it is optional, while in some others such as DOS, it is a requirement. Some operating systems limit the length of the extension such as DOS and OS/2, to three characters while others such as Unix do not. Some operating systems for example RISC OS do not use filename extensions. Unix accepts the separator dot as a legal character but does not give it a special recognition on the OS level.
